In my CBSE experience, we had a proper practical exam with actual apparatus, so I find this 'alternative-to-practical' concept quite different, *hai*. For you, I believe you must study the diagrams and procedures from your textbook very carefully, as if you had done them. My own tailoring taught me you can understand a stitch from a picture if you observe keenly. Still, I feel the real learning is in the hands-on work, like my sewing; reading about a machine is not the same as threading it yourself.
