In physics, they show work as the area under the force graph because it adds up the little pushes over a distance. That 1/2 k x^2 for a spring is just the area of that triangle on the graph. I memorized it for exams, but the real 'work' is seeing the graph of Mr. Murthy's pain decrease over weeks of rehab. His first full squat was the true area under the curve, not that formula.
