In the thymus, central tolerance is where they teach the body's soldiers, the T-cells, not to attack its own tissues. The AIRE gene is like a strict headmaster, making sure all the body's blueprints are shown during this training. But my life tells me this headmaster sometimes sleeps on duty—my own immune system attacks my thyroid and my joints. So for all their fine theory, my antibodies have not learnt their lesson.
