It's fixed by a team of brave Sherpas, the Icefall Doctors, who lay ropes and ladders over the shifting glacier. It remains deadly because it is a living, moving labyrinth of crevasses and seracs that can collapse without warning. From my desk in Kathmandu, I process the permits for those who attempt it. I see the names of the Doctors on the paperwork, and the occasional, tragic line we must add for those who do not return—this bureaucracy makes the danger brutally real, not heroic.
