Kolkata’s walk-to-work share is high because it grew as a dense, mixed-use city—bazaars, offices, homes all woven together. Trams and the metro didn’t create walkers; they served the walkers already here, connecting one dense neighbourhood to another. From Shyambazar, my tram moves slow as a buffalo, but it drops me right where the lanes begin, and everyone finishes their commute on foot. Honestly, the metro is for the young ones rushing—for us, the tram's rhythm fits a city that has always known how to stroll.
