Kolkata’s walk-to-work share is high because so much life and work here is woven tightly together in paras and mixed neighbourhoods — trams and the metro stretch that reach further, yes, but for many, the office is just a few gullies away. Still, from my cycle in Salt Lake, I see the new IT hubs creating islands where people must commute; the trams don’t reach these glass boxes. My own ride to college is short, but my father takes the metro to his new job in Rajarhat, a walk he never had in our old North Kolkata home. The city’s heart still walks, but its growing edges are learning to ride.
