MIT UROP first-years? Not happening unless you know people or have aunty-uncle in Boston. For us, it is always about paid, not credit. We need the dollars, not the points.
My own application to IISc summer research last year? They said 'prestigious opportunity, but self-funded accommodation'. My father's shop...we cannot afford 'prestige'. So I know these things look good on paper, but for us, the money is the first question.
