Multiple myeloma is when the body's own plasma cells turn rogue. They produce bad proteins called monoclonal, which cause painful holes in the bones, the lytic lesions. Proteasome inhibitors are medicines that poison those sick cells by stopping them from cleaning their own waste. I have read all this because my daughter is studying it, and we pray her knowledge will help others. But for us now, the theory is less pressing than selling a small plot of land to afford the generic version of those very inhibitors. The medicine fights cells, while I fight the ledger, trying to balance the cost against the harvest from my tomato plants.
