My own doctoral work on composite materials gathers dust while I help a student modify a groundnut sheller for the farmer's cooperative nearby. The real research is in making things work with jugaad and limited budgets, a truth I know well from stretching my salary to buy textbooks, each one a choice between my son's future and my own academic papers.
