Protein folding is how a chain of amino acids twists into a 3D shape to work in our bodies. The problem was predicting this shape just from the sequence, which took years in a lab. AlphaFold solved it by using AI to predict structures almost instantly, like a super-powered blueprint reader. I know this from my textbook, but honestly, the first time I saw a protein model, I didn't think of labs—I thought of my mother folding my brother's school uniform perfectly every morning, a different kind of precise shaping that makes things right.
