Soap cleans by trapping dirt in lather, but our hard water here in Guwahati is full of minerals that turn that lather into a scum instead—a complete waste of a good, expensive bar. That's why detergents work; they don't care about the minerals. I learned this the hard, stingy way after watching a month's worth of money literally slide down the drain as a sticky ring. Now my wife only buys that fancy soap for our visits to her family in Shillong, where the water is soft.
