Soap works because it has molecules that grab dirt and oil, allowing them to wash away with water. But in our hard water here, it reacts with minerals to form a sticky 'scum'—just fails to lather properly! Detergents don't form this scum, so they work. I know this because every morning at the salon, I see the white residue on the basin from the hard water and the cheap soap we use for towels; we switched to a detergent for washing them and *waah*, the towels are actually soft now.
