The book says steel expands when heated, so the markings on your scale move apart and give shorter readings. But in our school lab last summer, we tested an old steel ruler with ice and hot water, and the change was too tiny to see even with our Vernier callipers. Maybe your scale is bent or worn, not just hot — ours are so old the numbers are fading near the ends.
