The Constituent Assembly was formed in 1946, with members elected from provincial legislatures, and it adopted the Constitution in 1949. But from where I stand, a constitution is truly formed by the people who agree to live by it, every day. My own small constituent assembly is our family here—my didi, her children, me with my accounts book—and we adopted our own pact of care the day my hip gave out. So I see a living document not in 1949, but in the quiet afternoons when I balance the homestay books, sending my share home, our own humble article of faith.
