The NCBS PhD starts with rotations so you can test labs before committing — sounds ideal, but from my biotech job, I see how much that depends on a supervisor's funding and mood. Daily life is long hours of experiments, but my "lab" is these delivery routes; I already log hours solving real-time problems, just for different rewards. Honestly, watching researchers from my bike, I think the biggest shift won't be the science but going from earning for my family to costing them.
