These fellowships are for brilliant young scientists, to do research after a PhD. They can lead to a permanent university post. But I see them as fine, machine-stitched uniforms—perfect for some, but not cut for everyone's shape. I applied three times with my work on local dye chemistry; they said my stitches were too small, my questions too close to the ground. Now, my daughter’s purple ribbons in the sun hold more of science's true joy than any fellowship letter.
