Well, in the viva, they'd tell you to always follow the loop direction and assign signs based on whether you're going from negative to positive, or vice-versa, inside a cell. But baba, in my practical life fixing old radios, I see it as which cell is the 'stronger voice' at that moment. The weaker one's drop is a 'resistance' to that current, so its sign feels opposite to the stronger's push. You learn this by trying to power a small speaker with mismatched batteries and hearing the weak one sputter.
