Work is area under force graph because it's like adding up all the tiny pushes over a distance. That 1/2 k x^2 comes when you find the area of the triangle under the line for a spring's force — it's simply half of base times height. But I see force graphs and think of kneading fish cutlet mixture: the more you press and push, the more *work* your hands do, even if no formula measures how tired my arms get on a busy evening.
