Back home in Bihar, the arsenic comes from the very rocks under our fields, and 10 micrograms per litre is a number on paper that means nothing when the only water there is to drink comes from the handpump. My cousin’s hands shake now, like an old man’s, from that water. Here in Chennai, the builder gives us muddy tanker water that tastes of diesel, but at least it does not have that slow poison.
