Cotton with moong or soybean works in Punjab, not the usual sugarcane-cotton mix yaar. Sugarcane needs too much water, and our irrigation is for precise schedules. I intercrop cotton with short-duration moong—it's a legume, fixes nitrogen, and I get an extra pulse harvest before the cotton canopy spreads. Seen big farmers in Fazilka ruin yield by trying sugarcane in rotation, water-logging the field for the cotton. Stick to what suits the micro-irrigation.
