Cotton with pulses like moong or urad works in our heavy soils, because the legume fixes nitrogen for the cotton and we get an extra yield. For sugarcane, early-stage intercropping with spinach or coriander gives quick money before the cane towers. But that new idea of sugarcane with mustard? It fails here—the mustard robs the cane of moisture when we need it most. I know because my field gave half the cane yield the year I tried it, on my brother-in-law's advice.
