Here, we are doing wheat after paddy, and it takes much nitrogen from the soil, making it tired. Legumes like moong or matki we grow in between, they put nitrogen back with their roots. But the obvious answer forgets the water—our small field holds the monsoon water for paddy, then is hard and cracked for wheat; the real cost is this struggle of the land itself. I see it when the wheat straw comes up thin, same as my father's hair used to be.
