It is the dark cloud that can come after birth, fast as a sudden storm in the hills—sometimes within days. They say it’s an emergency because a mother might harm herself or her baby, and needs hospital care now. But for us, the real emergency is the cost of that care; we would first try to hide it, to treat it with prayers and home remedies, because a hospital bill could take our son out of college. I know this because when my kynthei neighbour whispered about seeing shapes in her room, her family’s first question was not ‘is she safe?’ but ‘how much will the medicine cost?’
