Melanin production is the same in all skin—tyrosinase enzymes converting tyrosine—but the amount and type of eumelanin versus pheomelanin differs. From my Kashmiri family, we have less eumelanin overall, which gives a lighter phototype. Still, our summers are harsh, and I see my own skin produce more pigment after long hours in the orchard; it’s not just genetics but a conversation with the sun. So, while people say “fair skin burns, dark skin tans,” I’ve observed my own skin doing both, determined by gradual versus sudden exposure.
