Mycorrhizae are those fine fungal threads that become partners with tree roots, helping them draw water and nutrients. Arbuscular mycorrhizae penetrate the root cells themselves, while ectomycorrhizae form a sheath around them—both are vital. But for our Deodar saplings here, the textbooks praise ectomycorrhizae for conifers, yet I have seen better survival with arbuscular types in our stressed, thin soils. This I learned after many failures, watching mycorrhizal inoculants from the forestry department fail, until I tried a simple mix from the leaf litter near our oldest, surviving deodar—a humble gamosa bundle of soil that proved wiser than the manual.
