Oh, those are the tiny *fulam*—flowers, you see—of fungus that hold hands with tree roots to help them eat. The arbuscular type goes right inside the roots, and the ecto-type makes a little coat over them; both bring water and food from the soil to the trees, like our pines and deodar. But I tell you, knowing this now only tightens the knot in my heart, because we cleared such forest land years ago for our sheep, not understanding we were cutting that delicate thread of life in the soil. Now, my small patch of land grows thin and stubborn, and I see it is because we sent away those invisible helpers.
