The Army holds it because it is India’s crown, yaar! At that height, the body weakens, the mind plays tricks—it’s a superhuman fight against the elements itself. And what comes down with the ice? Sometimes, it is our soldiers, preserved for years. My own father, a porter, came down with an avalanche…so I know the glacier doesn’t just give up water. It gives back our loved ones, long after we’ve stopped waiting.
