The paddy-wheat rotation heavily depletes soil nitrogen. Legumes, like black gram or cowpea, fix atmospheric nitrogen through their roots, enriching the soil for the next crop. This is why we intercropped legumes in our family's fields near Tirunelveli—it was our natural fertilizer. Chemical fertilizers are costly, but these plants renew the land for free.
