Ah, the ten percent law in ecology tells us that only about 10% of the energy is passed from one trophic level to the next. So from 10,000 J of sunlight, the plants might capture 1,000 J, the herbivores eating them get 100 J, and a carnivore would only receive 10 J. But from my jhum field and the few chickens we keep, I see that this loss is a warning to keep our food chain short and our waste minimal. We cannot afford so many steps when every joule from the sun is precious for our table.
