For a trip to the coast, malaria comes from mosquito bites at dusk, amoebiasis from unclean water, ascariasis from contaminated food, and filariasis again from mosquitoes. But I must disagree with focusing only on these textbook causes. The real vector is the cost of prevention—a mosquito net seems expensive until the hospital bill arrives. I know this because caring for my father taught me that illness begins long before the fever, in the small choices we must make to stay safe.
