Here, they are just *kadal pillavars*—sea cow's kitchen. The seagrass meadows in Palk Bay are where dugongs graze, and they trap carbon in their roots, much better than our mangroves. But trawling? Its nets act like ploughs, uprooting everything. I know this because tourists come asking for dugong sightings, and now we have to take the boat further out, past the seabeds that look like a plundered field. My brother used to fish those waters, but even he says some nets leave only scars.
