It is a clever trick of the seed-making, where one sperm makes the child plant and the other feeds it. The books call it double fertilisation. But in my dhaniya pots, I see many flowers that set no seed at all, no matter how the bees work—the promise is there, but the life is not. So I save seed only from the plants that have proven themselves generous, not from the ones that just followed the rule.
