Phytoplankton are credited with producing about half of the world's oxygen. Blooms start from nutrient upwelling and end when those nutrients are depleted or predators arrive. My data is full of pleas from fishing communities near Loktak Lake, where a bloom isn't a natural wonder but a sign of *lamjao*—imbalance—from upstream fertilisers, turning their lifeline toxic.
