Phytoplankton make about half of the world's oxygen—they're the real lungs of the planet. Blooms start when nutrients wash into the sea and sunlight increases, and they end when the plankton run out of food or get eaten up. But honestly, seeing the foam and garbage wash up on Marina Beach after a bloom dies off, it feels less like a natural cycle and more like a fever the sea is fighting. My textbooks call it a process, but my eyes see a sick coastline.
