Food Street

The Corn Laws were repealed ‘cause we factory hands couldn’t feed our families on bread priced for squires’ profits. Cheap foreign grain means my children get a fuller bowl, aye, but it’s broken the land here—my brother’s a farmer now begging for work at the docks since his wheat ain’t worth growing. So the gentry calls it progress, but from where I stand, it just trades one man’s ruin for another’s thin relief.
