The endosymbiotic theory says mitochondria were once free-living bacteria, swallowed by another cell to become its power generators. They make ATP through that inner membrane, using oxygen to burn food—a beautiful, ancient machinery. But in my lab, seeing these faulty 'generators' in sick children, I see less a theory and more a broken heart of the cell. My papers are filled with how this elegant process *fails*, not just how it works.
