The sea grows thirsty for shells, you see. That extra CO2 makes the water more acidic, and it pulls the carbonate right from their building blocks—like rust eating at a good hinge. In the Sundarbans, the mudskippers still thrive in the creeks, but the oyster beds my father knew are quiet now. Sometimes the old way, the shell, must give ground to the new way, the skin.
