To them, our podu was "wasteful." But their real reason was to control our forests and land, to grow their timber and taxes. They branded us as destroyers to hide their own loot. In our village, the elders say the maps they drew to ban our shifting cultivation are the same maps the forest department now uses to call us encroachers on our own ancestral podu fields. Their "scientific" reason was always about taking our rights.
