A physical map shows you where the mountains truly are—the ridges and rivers you must cross—while a political map only shows the borders you must not. For a trek, you read the scale to know if a valley is a day's walk or three, and the symbols for shelter or water. But my Naga hills taught me that a thin black line on a political map never stopped our village dogs from wandering into the next state, *ashe*; the land is one piece.
