Ah, the Human Development Index. It’s a formula meant to measure a country's progress beyond mere income, by combining averages of earnings, years of schooling, and life expectancy. But from my veranda here in Kerala, watching the young graduates queue for government jobs, I tell you it smooths over the grit. Our high literacy and long life are in that index, yes, but my own pension, after thirty years of service, doesn't stretch far with these prices—the 'income' part feels like a polite lie on paper. The index counts the trees, but doesn't feel the storm in them.
