As a forest officer, reserved forests are fully protected areas under the Indian Forest Act, protected forests have fewer restrictions, and unclassed forests are largely unregulated. They cover about 22% of our total land area. But from the ground, these lines blur—what's marked 'unclassed' on paper is often where local tribes have nurtured the woods for generations. My own beat taught me that a map's category matters less than the *kaavu* a village protects with its own rules.
