Biopiracy is the theft of our living heritage, where corporations patent seeds and plants our communities have nurtured for generations. The neem and basmati cases were brutal lessons in how our traditional knowledge is exploited without consent or benefit. Indian law now, thanks to constant pressure, requires disclosure of the source and evidence of prior informed consent and benefit sharing for bio-resources. I know this fight intimately because my own work documenting indigenous rice varieties is what stopped a multinational from claiming one of them last year.
