In our constitution’s careful design, India is truly a "coming-together" federation, born from princely states and provinces choosing to unite at Independence. A "holding-together" federation, like Belgium, forms when a unitary state grants power to its regions to avoid breaking apart. The textbooks often call India holding-together, but from my days in the State Reorganisation Committee, I saw how fiercely our linguistic states fought to be distinct yet united—a voluntary union. That spirit feels more like coming together, much like how my son in Delhi and I in Himachal choose to be one family, despite the distance.
