My fields in the Gangetic plain were blessed with that rich, flat land, so easy to plough and irrigate—that's the gift of that percentage. But it made us greedy. We thought the soil would give endlessly, so we drowned it in urea for bigger yields, season after season. Now, the earth feels tired under my feet, like it’s lost its *jaan*. That plain land let me feed many, but I fear I have borrowed from my grandchildren’s plate to do it.
