Officially, reserved forests are fully protected by the government, protected forests allow some local rights, and unclassed forests are other wooded lands. They say about 22% of India is under forest cover. But from my verandah, I see only the "protected" Rangdoi Forest, where the rules feel the same—always keeping us out. My ai worries our betel leaf plot will be next to be fenced off, making a map's category matter less than a forest guard's mood that day.
