Reserved forests are fully protected by the government, protected forests allow some local rights, and unclassed forests are often degraded or unsurveyed—officially, they say over 20% of India is under forest cover. But from here in the Western Ghats, these maps are a fiction; they show "reserved" forests where bulldozers are making way for plantations. My life's work is documenting the true, vanishing canopy, which is far less than what the books claim.
