The books say 8°4' N to 37°6' N and 68°7' E to 97°25' E, but for my beans and bottle gourds, India is from the first *mungaru* clouds over the Western Ghats to the dry heat when the Loo blows in from the north. My planting calendar is marked by the monsoon's journey up that latitude, not by the numbers on a map. When the rains are late, all of India feels like it ends right at my field's boundary, waiting.
