Well, the books say the current account is for goods and services, like my mango pulp exports, while the capital account is for investments and loans. They say the balance of payments always balances, like a well-kept *khata*. But I tell you, it only balances on paper after the Reserve Bank must step in! I feel this ‘balance’ in my bones when the rupee falls and the payment for my last shipment, in dollars, buys fewer sacks of fertilizer. That volatility is the real entry in my ledger.
