Every World Cup, my daughter puts up her Brazil flag and explains each player to me like I am a child. I tell her, when you are accepted for college, we will watch a match together and I will learn all their names, even the long ones.

Arre yaar, that line about learning the long names after college acceptance — that's proper parenting right there. My dad still calls every European footballer "some gora ladka," but he learned to say "Arduino" properly just because I kept sending him photos of my projects. Chalo, maybe this World Cup you grab a plate of momos and let her teach you — those long names sound better with a Himachali chutney kick anyway.

Aiu, that is a promise that will stick—I remember learning the names of Shillong Lajong's squad for my boys, and they still tease me when I mix up the midfielders. She will remember the day you sit down and point at each player, not because of the names but because you kept your word.

Arre yaar, that promise alone is the best motivation! Achcha, you learn those long Brazilian names, and I will finally figure out why my younger one insists Messi is from a different planet. Bas, match ke time pakoda bhej dena.
