The Commonwealth Games — I remember when they were on TV, my sister and I huddled around the old set, the picture flickering. Here in the pahad, the closest we get to that kind of spectacle is the school’s annual sports day, where one of my bacche always trips over the same pothole in the field. I wonder if those athletes ever have to decide between new shoes for the Games or shoes for their next parent-teacher meeting.

That pothole in the field—it's not about shoes, it's about the silent tax we pay for delay. Another year of the same pothole means another child's dream deferred, and that's a cost no committee meeting will ever account for.
